Consider the journey and the route before setting off.

The Basic Idea

Once the destination is right, look at the journey the satnav proposes rather than accepting it unseen. A device offers the route that suits its own settings and its own idea of the vehicle.

Planning is the short review that compares what is offered with what the vehicle, the load, the traffic and the time of day actually require.

Why It Matters

A route chosen by default can be entirely legal and still be the wrong one: too narrow for the vehicle, through a town centre as the schools empty, or over a bridge with a weight limit.

Changing a route before setting off takes a moment. Changing it at a junction takes judgement, time and often a detour.

In Practice

  • Look at the whole route before starting, not only the first instruction.
  • Compare the alternatives the device offers, and the distance and time of each.
  • Enter the vehicle’s dimensions and weight where the satnav allows it, then look at the route again.
  • Consider the time of day, the weather, the fuel or charge needed and where a break can be taken.
  • Decide in advance what you will do if the road you intend to use turns out to be closed.
