R T Scanlon is a writer and researcher on road navigation, with a background in education and management and many years of practical driving experience.
He is the author of the 2012 book How to Get More from Your Satnav, which explored how drivers can use navigation technology more intelligently rather than simply following instructions.
His latest book, Road Navigation: The Principles Explained, develops those ideas into a broader approach to road navigation. It examines the knowledge, observation, anticipation and judgement that sit alongside modern navigation technology, and uses the Six Principles of Road Navigation as a practical framework for developing these skills.
The book also considers the use of satnav in the UK driving test and the progression of navigation skills from novice drivers through to more experienced and professional road users.
The Road Navigation website continues that work, bringing together further research, practical examples and new developments in navigation technology, some of which have emerged since the book was published.
